What is a Child Advocacy Center?

Child Advocacy Centers began in the 1980s in order to serve abused children, by bringing together collaborative partners, such as local child protective services, law enforcement, prosecutors, and medical and mental health providers, CAC's can make a positive difference in the lives of abused children by bringing professionals to the child instead of asking children and their families to access services through many different portals. Each community that has a CAC does business a little differently but most inlcuding The Terrie Hess House Child Advocacy Center strives to meet the standards developed and endorsed by the National Children's Alliance.

The Terrie Hess House Child Advocacy Center is a program of Prevent Child Abuse Rowan.
The Center was named in memory of Terrie Spencer Hess, the first president of Prevent Child Abuse Rowan.
A Multi-disciplinary team coordinates investigations of all child sex abuse allegations in Rowan County.
The Medical Director, Dr. Kathleen Russo, conducts medical exams and trained staff facilitates interviews.
The need for a Rowan County CAC was established in 2002 community survey.
We strive to seek accreditation from National Children’s Alliance.
We began providing services in March 2005.
Since that time we have served over 200 children and more than 600 non-offending family members.
